Kuiper
The biggest musical surprise of 2024 for me.
I didn't really know what to expect from Mogwai. I didn't know who the support act was going to be (if anyone at all), and I didn't really know what Mogwai looked like. "Is this Mogwai?? Without a support act?" and "They sound incredible, but I've not heard these songs before."
It wasn't Mogwai. It was Kuiper. Not the belt. Turns out they're local to me. Turns out this was their first ever live show and holy shit did it deliver. Swelling synths, some of the crispest drums I've heard, and huge guitar shreds. The songs build further than you can My only concern is that I'm imagine and when the tension releases it is bliss.
The stuff available on streaming services feels very different from what I experienced on 25 Feb this year. And I think that's a sign of a great band. I want live music that is an expression, not a reproduction.
I still don't quite understand how they managed to land their first gig as the support act for Mogwai, but without doubt they deserved to be there.
I think they deserved to share the headline.
If you can catch Kuiper anywhere at all, do. You won't be disappointed.
Mogwai were phenomenal, too, on the night. But that wasn't a surprise.
Edit: completely forgot to include links to Kuiper.
